have you ever knocked on the door of a color

and invited it in for wine and cheese

before offering a full course of intimacy

and a small cup of coffee to sooth the sting

of your violent careless advances

and selfdisclosures made prematurely

in short have you ever seen red

and let that prostitutes light go black

?

forgeting the lizard

i saw a lizard
in the water
in a fountain
in an atrium
in a building
in a city
in a state
in a country
in a world
in a solar system
in a galaxy
in the universe
and as i thought
about the universe
i forgot
about the lizard

i am a young man

anxious to be an old man

wishing to be a young man

so i can love you now

as i will then

Matthew the paradox

in a way that conflicts me

the paradox of walking both forward and backward

is how i seem to be

knowing but really not knowing

a paradox i seem to be

i exist but i really don’t seem to

order for the sake of chaos

chaos for the sake of order

is the paradox of me

Bound freedom

To be free

in more ways than one

would have me soaring away from you

keeping me bound and locked away

without thought and without nothing to say

your distance keeps me from soaring, from being so free

A Man made whole through a broken life

Arrogant dreams of the foolish and young
Dreaming of power and dreaming of love
Now turned to nightmares by the things we’ve done
Evil nightmares tamed by your peaceful dove
You descend on me from the sky above
Flying so gently, my hate melts away
The sky’s raining mercy, lost in this flood
Panicking and drowning, we part our ways
Love once eternal, now lost to the waves
Flows away, leaving me beat and broken
Alone in my pain in these somber days
Screaming for love, my torn heart has spoken
But what I’ve lost will be left in that sea
Get out of that water, God please change me

mistaken

i can see it still
the cataclysm the collapse
of the living tower
grown from the ground
or fallen from the sky

i can see it still
the ash forest black
each tree bent inward
drooping back against the earth
inviting and foreboding

i can see it still
the tower in the thicket
unbending unending
lost in the stormclouds above
anchored to the forest below

i can see it still
the earth shaken to a split
the very dust convulsing
as the chasm grew deeper
threatening and dark

i can see it still
as the tower disappeared
claimed by the mouth in the earth
and dragging the black sky on its spire
’til the clouds were one with the trees

i can see it still
clearer now than then
the day my stronghold fell
the cave that drew it in
it wasn’t what i thought
