mistaken

i can see it still
the cataclysm the collapse
of the living tower
grown from the ground
or fallen from the sky

i can see it still
the ash forest black
each tree bent inward
drooping back against the earth
inviting and foreboding

i can see it still
the tower in the thicket
unbending unending
lost in the stormclouds above
anchored to the forest below

i can see it still
the earth shaken to a split
the very dust convulsing
as the chasm grew deeper
threatening and dark

i can see it still
as the tower disappeared
claimed by the mouth in the earth
and dragging the black sky on its spire
’til the clouds were one with the trees

i can see it still
clearer now than then
the day my stronghold fell
the cave that drew it in
it wasn’t what i thought
