Oh, honey, where did you hear such things?
Hey, did you hear that Mary was caught with another man?
I heard that it was her child who walked in on it.
Yeah, that’s right, and then she beat her little girl and threatened her if she ever told.
Mmhmm, that sure is right…
DO WHAT?!? If I may be so bold, SHUT THE BLOODY HELL UP
I’ve recently become irritated about some of the behaviour occuring, not in my house or in a forum or even on the street, but in the church. There are places I expect gossip to be spread like butter on toast – excpect, not condone – but the church-house is not one of them.
And shouldn’t be. Period.
5But my enemies say nothing but evil about me. “How soon will he die and be forgotten?” they ask. 6They visit me as if they are my friends, but all the while they gather gossip, and when they leave, they spread it everywhere. 7All who hate me whisper about me, imagining the worst for me.
A troublemaker plants seeds of strife; gossip separates the best of friends.
28When they refused to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their evil minds and let them do things that should never be done. 29Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, fighting, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. 30They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They are forever inventing new ways of sinning and are disobedient to their parents.
That last one is my favorite. Do you see the kind of heinous and vile acts that gossip is thrown in among? Greed, hate, envy, murder, fighting, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip – just in case you missed or skipped it. How many Christians do you know who show up on the church-house steps squirrelly-eyed and foaming at the mouth, mumbling under their breath, “I’ll just wait until he’s finished the offeratory. Then I’ll rush to the alter, drop the AK out of the trenchcoat, and show that rotten pastor just what it means to suffer wrath. MWHAHAHAHA”? Well if you’re not going to show up with lethal intent, don’t show up with the latest gossip either. I’d prefer you just drop the gossip all together, but at the least show some respect by leaving it at the door before you go in.
God’s house is not a place for slander, lies, or gossip. I don’t just mean the church, but also the temple that is your body. These things have no place in you. If Christ be in you, do not give Him such companions as these. “What communion does light have with darkness?” It has none! When Jesus saw how the temple had been turned in a den of iniquity, he ousted the villians just after he went to town on their furniture. The moral here is to buy durable furniture? No. The point is what God has deemed holy, may no man treat unaccordingly. What right have we to deface that which is God’s? Is He not its sole Master? Or is it we have only made Him its Master in word, but not in deed? Words that are not paralleled by actions are but a useless movement of the tongue and lips, just as gossip is…
